The Teacher Tip
Share Your Reading Life
November 30, 2017
Adapted from Reading Essentials by Regie Routman.
Students watch their teachers carefully, both admiring and emulating them, making it important for teachers to model the behaviors they want to foster in their students.
Try this: Make your reading life visible to your students so they will have a model for their own reading lives. Share your passion and reasons for reading as well as your favorite genres and authors. Share what you are reading and how you choose your books.
Let students in on the importance of knowing what to read next. Tell them about the books or magazines that are piled up on your nightstand or floor. Model the importance of both reading now and having a reading plan for the future by asking: “What is your ‘now’ book? What is your ‘next’ book?”
