The Teacher Tip

Make Teaching Choices Grounded in Your Beliefs

October 4, 2017

Adapted from Read Write Teach: Choice and Challenge in the Reading-Writing Workshop by Linda Reif

Our beliefs guide everything we do in the classroom. If we want to teach with intention, to be sure what we model for our students and invite them to do is consistent with what we believe, we must hold our beliefs and our choices up to the light.

Try this internal line of questioning: What do the choices you make—in the routines you establish, the amount of talking and collaboration the students do in your classroom, the things they are invited to read, write, solve, and consider—say about what you believe about:

  • teaching,
  • your students,
  • your subject matter/discipline
