The Teacher Tip

Enrich Play Centers with Supplemental Materials

May 19, 2017

Adapted from Choice time by Renee Dinnerstein

Over time, planning for choice time centers must also be responsive to the interests of the class as a whole. For example, if a classwide study of the neighborhood has taken a particular turn to an interest in bridges, then center activities might be directed toward that interest.

You could:

  • add books and photos of bridges to the block center and art center
  • provide art materials that lend themselves to bridge construction, such as cardboard strips, string, and yarn
  • challenge children in the math center to use manipulatives (triangles, squares, rectangles) to build a bridge

add books about bridges to the reading nook.
